Iron Manners: New Metal Railings for a Coatesville Brick Porch

Coatesville was built by steelworkers, and this brick porch deserved railings with the same backbone. The old ones were loose, low and mostly decorative in the least useful sense. The new black metal system is anchored into the masonry itself, standing next to hydrangeas that clearly approve.
Anchoring into brick is its own trade
Railing posts on masonry live or die at the anchor. We drill into the brick body or the mortar joint depending on the condition of each, set sleeve anchors or epoxy anchors accordingly, and torque to spec. A railing should take the full weight of an adult stumbling into it, because one day it will. Code asks for 200 pounds of resistance at any point, and grandma asks for more.
Height matters too: old porch railings often sit below the 36 inches modern code requires. Replacing them is a chance to fix the geometry without losing the look.

Railings, a refinished door and house numbers you can read cost a fraction of any remodel and change how the whole block sees the house.
