The part you are really buying
Behind the old tile we found what decades of moisture do to walls built before modern waterproofing: stained studs and framing that had drifted out of plumb. We reframed the alcove square, set cement board, and installed the pan liner with a flood test before a single tile went up. Oatey's pan liner system is the industry workhorse for a reason, and testing it before tile is the step bad contractors skip because nobody can see it later.
The marble look surround went on last. Tile is the reward, not the work. The work is everything in the middle photos.
For anyone planning the same
Ask every bidder one question: what is your waterproofing system, by name? A real answer sounds like a product and a method. A bad answer sounds like cement board is waterproof, which it is not.
